War on coal: Wyoming loses nearly 500 coal jobs

KTVQ in Billings, Montana is reporting that nearly 500 coal jobs are set to disappear in Wyoming, the least populous of the 50 states.

Peabody Energy cites “weak market conditions” as the reason it will lay off 235 employees from the North Antelope Rochelle Mine in the Powder River Basin.

And  Arch Coal announced it will lay off  243 workers, or 15 percent of its workforce, at the Black Thunder mine.

Obama Halts New Coal Mining Leases on Federal Land

In a move seen by many critics of President Barack Obama as a continuation of his administration’s “war on coal,” Interior Secretary Sally Jewell ordered a three-year moratorium on new coal leases on federal land.

Existing coal leases on public land would not be affected by the rule.

In her January 17 announcement of the rule, Jewell cited concerns over coal’s supposed contribution to climate change as the reason for the moratorium, saying the Interior Department will conduct a new analysis of how the extraction and burning of coal could make global climate change more likely.

Obama to propose $10 a barrel tax on oil

Americans are enjoying a (temporary) period of reduced gas prices, but that could soon change if Obama’s latest proposal for an additional $10 per barrel tax were to be adopted. Considering the price of oil is around $30 a barrel right now, this new tax would increase oil and gas prices by more than 30 percent.

Here’s the crazy logic behind this idea as revealed by a White House statement:

By placing a fee on oil, the President’s plan creates a clear incentive for private sector innovation to reduce our reliance on oil and at the same time invests in clean energy technologies that will power our future.
