Double Standard: No fines for EPA after polluting rivers with orange muck

Polluting rivers is an unpardonable sin… unless you’re a government agency apparently. BP was fined $5.5 billion (that’s billion with a ‘b’) for the 2010 Deepwater Horizon spill, but the EPA will pay no fines for the catastrophic Animas River spill it unleashed.

The Washington Times reports:

“Sovereign immunity. The government doesn’t fine itself,” said Thomas L. Sansonetti, former assistant attorney general for the Justice Department’s division of environment and natural resources.

EPA demands $16M from Wyoming man who built a pond on his own property

Andy Johnson is a Wyoming farmer who committed the apparently unpardonable sin of building a stock pond for his horses and cattle on his 8-acre property in Fort Bridger, Wyoming.

The EPA claims that the pond is a violation of the Clean Water Act, known to many as the biggest land grab in the history of the world.  The EPA ordered Johnson to restore the area to its original condition or accumulate fines of $37,500 a day.

EPA threatens millions in fines for stabilizing riverbank with rocks

An Oregon farmer is facing the potential of millions of dollars in fines ($37,500 in civil penalties for each day of violating the Clean Water Act) for using rocks and gravel to rebuild and stabilize a riverbank after it was washed out by a flood in 2007.

Despite having sought out and received permission from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers for his work, Bill Case is being accused of “discharging pollutants” into the North Santiam River by the EPA.
