Oregon Sheriff warns land protection proposal could spark standoff

SALEM, OREGON — Sparks flew Monday during a hearing attended by ranchers and environmentalists in the state Capitol on a proposal to turn 2.5 million acres of canyonlands and desert in southeastern Oregon into a federally protected monument.

Cattlemen said their livelihoods could be threatened.

Malheur County Sheriff Brian Wolfe told a panel of state lawmakers that he was worried armed outsiders would exploit the situation, with families in the remote area having been involved in cattle business for generations and being suspicious of the federal government and what restrictions it might impose.

Malheur protester Scott Willingham pleads guilty

Oregon live is reporting that Scott Willingham has pled guilty to stealing government property. He is the first of the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge protesters to enter a guilty plea.

Willingham was accused of taking or converting government-owned cameras for his own use. He faced two counts of theft of government property but entered a guilty plea in federal court in Portland to one count.

Feds conspire to send Bundy brothers to prison for life

The feds are piling charges on those who took part in the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge protest, and also adding charges related to the Bundy standoff near Bunkerville, Nevada, in 2014.

With the new charges from both cases, the Bundy brothers could face life in prison if convicted of all charges and given the maximum prison sentences.

It’s not just the Bundys who are being targeted, though.

Patriots surrender to FBI, all arrested in Oregon

The 41-day occupation of the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge in Orgeon ended today as the final four patriots occupying the facility surrendered to the FBI and were arrested and charged with federal felonies.

The Washington Post reports:

The FBI said it arrested David Fry at about 11 a.m. without incident. Before he was taken into custody, agents arrested Sandy Anderson, 48, of Idaho; her husband, Sean Anderson, 47; and Jeff Banta, 46, of Elko, Nev.

War on the West: Cliven Bundy arrested by FBI in Portland, Oregon

Cliven Bundy, the Nevada rancher and patriot who in 2014 sparked an armed protest against federal tyranny, land seizure, and cattle butchery, was arrested Wednesday, as he arrived in Portland, Oregon.  He was planning to go to Burns, Oregon, where his sons and others had been ambushed, shot, and arrested by federal enforcers two weeks before.

Oregon Live reports:

Bundy, 74, was booked into the downtown Multnomah County jail at 10:54 p.m.
