A U.S. Forest Service decision to close most of Idaho’s Great Burn area along the Montana border to motorized access has observers both frustrated and confused.

Nez Perce-Clearwater Forest Supervisor Cheryl Probert released a draft record of decision banning snowmobile access in the national forest’s recommended wilderness areas and limiting summer motorized use to a single trail. Motorized advocates called the ban unjustified because the area lacks a federal wilderness designation.

U.S. Forest Service barricades forest road, destroys game trails in Idaho

The United States Forest Service severely damaged a forest road and trail in Northwestern Idaho earlier this month, raising serious questions about the agency’s ability to care for federally-managed lands.

During the first weekend in June, several members of Northwestern Gold Prospectors Association (NWGPA) planned to attend a gathering to prospect private claims in the Bedrock Gulch and Eagle Creek areas. When the prospectors arrived, Forest Road 152 was blocked with cement barricades and hundreds of felled trees.

Feds halt Idaho logging project after environmentalist lawsuit

The U.S. Forest Service has rescinded a decision approving a salvage logging project in northern Idaho after a federal judge halted the plan at the request of two environmental groups.

The Lewiston Tribune reports that Nez Perce-Clearwater National Forest Supervisor Cheryl Probert on Wednesday stopped the project so the agency could re-examine the analysis leading to its approval.

The project near the Selway and Middle Fork Clearwater rivers was intended to harvest 34 million board feet of timber scorched by a 2014 wildfire.

The U.S. Forest Service will consider various methods, including a reservation system for overnight visitors to the heavily traveled Snowmass-Maroon Bells Wilderness, to better manage the glut of hikers flocking to the popular area each year.

Calling Conundrum Hot Springs “our biggest problem,” District Ranger Karen Schroyer said Tuesday that the process to limit use there would begin next year, and other facets of an adaptive management plan would follow.

9News is reporting that the U.S. Forest Service (USFS) in Summit County, Colorado, is proposing a year round camping ban for a popular campsite.

Ken Waugh with the U.S. Forest Service says they are already facing budget cuts and can’t always patrol that area to make sure it’s clean and safe from fires. They’re proposing a ban on year round overnight camping in that area.
