Hundreds of Utah coal miners speak out on proposed federal reforms

Frustrated coal miners, coal company executives and truckers who haul coal swamped a daylong public meeting Thursday on proposed reforms to the federal coal lease program, urging a three-year moratorium on new coal leases be overturned and reform efforts dropped.

“Growing up, I never thought the biggest threat to my job would be my government,” said Phillip Jensen, an engineering tech for Utah American Energy.

58% of Utah Republicans favor suing feds over federal lands

A recent UtahPolicy poll found that 58 percent of Utah Republicans are ready to spend millions on a legal fight to gain state control of federal public lands within the state.

When asked the following question, 58 percent of Utah Republicans said yes, 31 percent said no, and 12 percent were unsure.

Do you agree or disagree that the state of Utah should spend $4.5 million on legal fees this year to sue the federal government for ownership of federal land in Utah?

BLM wants to close thousands of Utah County acres to recreational shooting

The War on the West is being waged in many ways and in many arenas, but the BLM is often at the forefront of restricting use and cutting off access.

The Salt Lake Tribune is reporting that the BLM wants to close 3,450 acres in Utah County’s Lake Mountains to recreational shooting. Fortunately there are some folks standing up to these unnecessary restrictions.

The Utah Shooting Sports Council blasted the BLM’s proposal, however, saying the BLM’s proposal scapegoats shooters and uses public safety and rock-art damage as an excuse to justify closures.

Piute County Sheriff threatens to arrest Forest Service personnel

Piute County, Utah, may be where the next big showdown with the federal government occurs. Nearly three quarters (74 percent) of the county is controlled by the BLM and the Forest Service, and Sheriff Marty Gleave has had enough. He took a strong position in a recent discussion with the Rural Caucus of the Utah State legislature.

We’re not taking no more cuts on the Mountain.
