A lethal combination of drought, heat and voracious bark beetles has killed 26 million trees in the Sierra Nevada over the last eight months — an alarming finding for a state already raging with wildfires fueled by desiccated landscapes.

The dire estimate offered Wednesday by federal officials brings the loss of trees since 2010 to at least 66 million, a number that is expected to increase considerably throughout the year, despite an average winter of rain and snow that brought some relief to urban Californians.

More than 40 rookie wildland firefighters spent the past week learning about their new trade at a camp in the Sawtooths north of Fairfield.

On Thursday, they put out a fire for the first time.

Crew boss Adam McKean knelt down and drew a diagram in the dirt path, explained to his crew what they were about to do and gave them tips like paying attention to the wind and weather and trying to chat and get to know their colleagues as they worked.

A new study out of a Welsh university found there’s been no increase in “area burned or in fire severity for many regions of the world,” despite predictions global warming would cause more severe wildfires as temperatures rise.

In fact, researchers found “increasing evidence that there is overall less fire in the landscape today than there has been centuries ago.”

“Yet many consider wildfire as an accelerating problem, with widely held perceptions both in the media and scientific papers of increasing fire occurrence, severity and resulting losses,” Drs.

Federal officials are putting in emergency fuel breaks in southwest Idaho and southeast Oregon to reduce wildfire risk while they work on an environmental assessment for a larger fuel break project for the area.

The U.S. Bureau of Land Management fuel break project is part of a $67 million rehabilitation effort following a wildfire last year that scorched 436 square miles of sagebrush steppe that supports cattle grazing and some 350 species of wildlife, including sage grouse.

The solution to the West’s wildfire crisis is simple

Nearly a dozen years ago, Thomas M. Bonnicksen, a historian of North American forests and originator of the concept of restoration forestry, offered a simple solution to the West’s wildfire crisis.

We must restore our forests to their historic fire-resistant condition. Historically, about 63 percent of our forests were resistant to catastrophic fire. Now, most of our forests are overgrown and pose a serious wildfire threat.
