Pack of at least 7 Wolves is Menacing the Boise Foothills

Reports from the AP and Capital Press have revealed that a pack of at least 7 wolves is roaming about the Boise Foothills near homes in the Avimor Subdivision.

There have been lone wolf sightings in the Boise foothills over the years but this is the first time a pack has been detected in the area.

IWS State Director Todd Grimm said seven different sets of wolf tracks have been found near Avimor Subdivision, which is located in the foothills north of Boise, by far the state’s largest urban area.

Environmentalists sue to stop wolf killing in Idaho

Five radical environmentalist groups filed a lawsuit in Idaho on Wednesday seeking to stop a federal agency from killing dangerous wolves in the state until a new environmental analysis is completed.

The Idaho Statesman reports:

Idaho-based Western Watersheds Project and four other groups in the 27-page federal lawsuit say the 2011 analysis by the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Wildlife Services is flawed and outdated.

Idaho wolves now at levels ‘well above’ what is necessary

When the Canadian gray wolves were introduced to Idaho in the ’90s, Idahoans were assured that the federal program was necessary to prevent the animal’s extinction. Despite warnings from those who knew the truth about the harm these predators would wreak on the state, the plan went forward.

Today, the predators have more than recovered and their numbers are “well above” the threshold required to keep the animals off the endangered species list.

New Mexico to sue U.S. Fish and Wildlife over wolf release plan

The Albuquerque Journal is reporting that New Mexico officials have notified the federal government that they will sue to block the planned release of more Mexican gray wolves without the state’s OK.

The state Department of Game and Fish called the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s release plan “unpermitted and illegal” and said it will go to court unless the federal agency backs down.

The state department last year denied the federal agency’s application to release wolves into the wild.
